Linux still not getting it right (Microsoft Corp Sucks)
I'm itching to switch from Windows but even Ubuntu 9.10 is a visual downgrade from Windows XP which is about 9 years old. In Ubuntu/GNOME apps look like they're stuck together by paper and glue. Any ideas?

emerald? compiz? try a different desktop manager, change your settings?
Linux still not getting it right
Yes I've tried both compiz and emerald already, and the effects are really nice. But I think it's the apps themselves: the buttons, icons, controls, all suck.

You could try KDE. it's pretty much like windows 7.. a thread on this forum quite rightly points out that all the win 7 eye candy is a KDE rip-off!!!
Go LINUX Baby!!!

I switched over long ago, you'll like it
LINUX DOES THINGS RIGHT
I have a lot of ideas. But then that is why I use LINUX SYSTEMS. i dont expect perfection. i dont expect to have everything i want either. which is why we dumped msheets server some years back. but i have ideas... and one of those ideas is to accept the freedom that LINUX offers. another idea is to learn to write software to make things i want. another idea is to work around knowing there is always a way. another idea is to look outside the u.s. for resources because most of the rest of the world prefers LINUX. msheets business is to cater to lazy persons and fools who would rather pay up and believe that msheets is utterly reliable until you read their disclaimer and eula and such escape clauses. very soon this year 100% of our systems will be LINUX and especially "programs served up"! here's the deal... WHAT HOOK DO YOU WANT TO BE ON?
Linux still not getting it right
If you're not mentally absorbed in the task at hand, you might notice such trivialities as to what the desktop looks like. I'd just as soon avoid the high prices, the "you're a thief" attitude along with the "good enough for who it's for" attitude.
Linux has a hang of it
Ubuntu is not meant to be look cool when its stock, but you can adjust everything.
But i would recommend you to install Linux Mint, its ubuntu based so you get same repositories, and it looks much better.
I find the new KDE to be extremely annoying, the ease of use is all gone and instead you get huge amount of non-necessary eyecandy.
My favourite desktop manager is openbox, its simple, its lightweight and superfast, it looks really good in a new minimalistic way. I have this on my mini-laptop, specs aint much, but the way it instantly reacts to my every action is totally unbelivable. At work i have a 4-cored new desktop PC with windows 7, and it really feels sluggish compared to my laptop.
And by the way..
When you say that gnome apps are being hold together by paper and clue, it reminds me when i tested Windows Vista for the first time on my friends PC.
This is what I mean.
Still has some time to go...

Who can spot the Linux version?

betwieen wista and mackintosh?
Right
Right. Obviously. Somebody who has never used Linux could see it as well. That needs to change.
Right
Those are just themes, GNOME is highly configurable. There are plenty of user-made themes online. If you wanted to, you can get your system to look exactly like Windows 7.
I do agree though, there are some pretty ugly applications. The great thing is that it's all open source, so you can change anything you want.

Wut the hell is a linux that lika a babe in a thong ah!
Linux still not getting it right
You gotta understand that Linux is not and has never been an attempt to clone Windows. It began as a "clean-room" Unix clone, and has exceeded Unix in quality and stability.
It seems that may people hesitate to make the move from Windows to Linux because they expect Linux GUIs to works just like Windows because of the kayboard-mouse-video human interface. It is not Windows. However I can understand the complaint that it doesn't look l;ike windows.
Part of the problem is that Windows greately limits the users choine of how it will appear. Linux is very different in that it provides the freedom to change it as you like.
Both Gnome and KDE can be themed. If you don't like the pasted look of the controls, you can change them. Unlike Windows, themes can change the appearencs of the window frames, and the taskbar, in addition to the icons, color and background themes found in windows.
You can also trade glitz for efficiency. I used to use a window manager called "Enlightenment" which featured such things as animated backgrounds. It actually had some of the same eyecandy found in the Vista Aero interface a few years before Vista. But all those fancy effects came at the cost of cpu usage, even with a fast video card.
At the other extreme, I had a laptop that I used while traveling. Purchased for $20 at a yardsale, it was a 486dx with 16M ram and a 60M hd. I had a minimal system with a lightweight GUI installed, a brower, email and news reader software and a few games for the kids. It worked vwery well for saurfing the net frm hotel rooms, and since I didn't keep any sensitive data on it, I didn't care if it got stolen. In fact, when on of my sons accidentaly knocked it off thetable and busted the screen, I didn't even get upset.
But Linux get a lot of things right. It's stable. It's secure. It doesn't require you load a bunch of crapware you will never use, and I don't have to worry about the software Nazis kicking in my door and hauling me to jail for not being able to produce the receipts to prove I paied for all my software.
